Academic Interests: Research focuses on fundamental mechanisms of regulation of epithelial chloride secretion, the transport event underlying the clinical manifestations of cystic fibrosis and numerous digestive disorders characterized by diarrhea. Current funding includes projects examining the regulation of Na-K-2Cl cotransporter function and expression, the impact of ammonia and ammonia-derived oxidants on intestinal function, and the role of purinergic compounds in the epitheial response to metabolic stress. particular emphasis is placed on the role of the actin-based cytoskeleton in cell signaling as it relates to integral membrane transport protein function and tight junctional integrity. Novel approaches to anti-diarrheal therapy and to therapy of cystic fibrosis are suggested by various projects within the laboratory | |||||||||||||||
